New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, Classic and Progressive Rock

Ashaena Calea Review

Asheana-CaleaThe always helpful Adrian from Loud rage Music sent me a review copy of Asheans’s new album titled Calea.

Not a band I’d heard of prior which may be the case for you too.

The band is from Romania and play “Pagan metal”. They’ve been around since 2006 and Calea is their second full album. An intriguing listen indeed.

Pagan metal doesn’t pigeon-hole them fully in my opinion. It’s wider than that.

Yes, it “rocks” and is a bit on the dark side though there’s variety in the songs including traditional folksy style and interwoven melodies amongst the heaviness and the rifferama.

If Songs from the Wood era Jethro Tull went full on heavy metal it might sound something like Asheana.

A grower of a listen too. There’s a lot going on behind the power with the folky undercurrent giving proceedings something of a trance-like quality in parts. Slightly trippy even.

Here’s the video for Zbor însetat – a seven minute “suite” which switches style throughout to show the variety on offer.

I like Calea. An interesting album with that something different . Why not see what your ears think about it?

To do that, stream some of the album from the record label’s BandCamp page here:

If you like it you can bag your copy from that page too for a nice price. Go on – give something different a chance….!
