Heroes Don’t Ask Why Review

Here’s an interesting new one I suggest you check out. A relatively new band out of Finland named Heroes Don’t Ask Why.

Their drummer, Kimmo, got in touch and kindly sent a CD for me to listen to and review.

Kimmo tells me that the band was formed in 2015 with he himself joining to thump the tubs in early 2016. He describes the music style as “melodic divorce metal with a rock attitude”.

Also that the (rather tasty) guitar work is provided by a couple of cousins with is “both aggressive and in the next moment mellow”.

I’d say that’s an excellent way to put it.

Heroes Don’t Ask Why recorded a debut six track mini-album at the end of last year. It’s that self-titled recording which Kimmo sent to me on CD.

After half a dozen spins or so I am pleased to report it is a fine effort indeed. Interesting, varied, powerful, heavy, touch of blues and melodic. Has something a little bit different about it.

The opener – Seen it All has a machine gun rat-at-at-at riff, strong drumming, a mazy bass and an excellent vocal. A proper in your face short but sweet salvo of sound. The piano in the background adds an extra dimension and they even find time to slot in a short, gentle acoustic passage before the power comes back in again.

Look at and listen to the video:

The next cut, Heroes steps it a bit and Time Runs Out is in a similar vein.

Paralyzed is perhaps my choice cut of the half dozen with it’s moody delivery and fine guitar work.

Frostbytes is another hard hitter then the closer, Goodbye, has a bit of an atmospheric feel as it veers this way and that with some sensitivity and more fine fretwork to play it out.

I like Heroes Don’t Ask Why plenty. A most promising debut effort. Makes me think of Queensryche circa Promised Land mixed with Hellowwen circa Master of the Rings.

Do check out the band – recommended.
