New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, Classic and Progressive Rock

Malleus White Noise

Malleus-White-NoiseThose of you who are “very old” like me grew up with the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Great days. One of THE NWOBHM bands at the time was Witchfynde and the legendary “Give ‘em Hell” etc.

Ex-Witchfynde bassist Andro Colulton is still active, now with his new band Malleus and a debut single White Noise.

It’s a sort of back to the future thing. As Andro says, Malleus have arisen from his ZXY project because: “We have finally got the sound and the line-up that I was after in the 1980’s.”

The single is as recorded all the way back in 1984 and unreleased until now. It comprises of three tracks. White Noise, Driftin’ Man and a bonus cut Dark Dreams.

Excellent stuff indeed. Andro’s bass is at the heart of everything. I believe he uses the term of “lead bass” which is quite apt as you will hear if you pick up the single.

The musical style is stripped down, heavy, dark and hypnotic even. Wouldn’t be out of place in Hall of the Mountain Grill-era Hawkwind methinks.

The throbbing bass and chugging rhythm guitar in the background make an interesting sound. Andro has something a little different here and it works well. I’d call it a “fusion” of NWOBHM and space rock.

Here’s a taster. Malleus live at (I think) the Black Market is Warsop.

An album is planned featuring songs written back in the old days and new ones too.

The White Noise single is available from Andros’ web site. At just a fiver you can’t pass it up – can you?
