New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, Classic and Progressive Rock

Michael Schenker Fest Resurrection Review.

Michael Schenker Fest ResurrectionSchenker gets his best mates together and records an album which is probably one of his most consistent of recent times – and with more than a nod back to the glorious MSG spell way back in the 1980s.

The MSG comparison hardly surprising when you look at the “gang” here – Gary Barden, Graham Bonnet, Chris Glen and Ted McKenna all ex-MSG. Chuck in Robin McAuley from a different incarnation of the MSG acronym and Doogie White from the Temple of Rock to make it four vocalists. And let’s not forget Steve Mann in the Paul Raymond slot and it’s a line-up which surely cannot fail.

The four vocalists share lead duties roughly equally each taking songs which suit their styles. And the four of them combine on two cuts – Warrior and the Last Supper. World class stuff. Mann, Glen and McKenna very solid.

Oh – and that man Schenker. He’s all over it. Effortless six-stringed mastery. Arguably slightly restrained but the style is unmistakable and it’s very good to hear him playing so well and so consistently.

Heart and Soul is an excellent fast-paced opener with a roaring solo work. Next up is Warrior – with the four vocalists chipping in. A slow burner with typical Schenker working away in an extended “outro” over the “Warrior” chants. Check out the video:

Other highlights include Might Moods with Bonnet in full flow, Everest with the big chorus, the light heated fun of Messin’ Around and the monster hook of Anchors Away.

Each of the dozen songs on Resurrection has its own merits. And not a little melody involved either. It’s the album Schenker should have made instead of Built to Destroy…….

Let’s hope there’s more to come from Schenker Fest. It’s a proper pleasure to listen to him playing so well. And judging from the interviews on the bonus DVD being in a good place personally. A happy Michael Schenker playing guitar has few equals or betters.
