New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, Classic and Progressive Rock

Mythra: Death and Destiny 40th Anniversary Edition Review Review

Mythra Death and DestinyMythra’s Death and Destiny EP originally issued all the way back in 1979 remains to this day a proper New Wave of British Heavy Metal classic. A self-financed effort from the band to make their mark on the NWOBHM scene.

And it did….selling well and getting some attention. I bought a copy back then – though it’s long since disappeared somewhere over the years probably misplaced during house moves. Do regret losing it.

Whilst things didn’t work out for Mythra they reformed a few years ago and have remained active since releasing excellent albums with Still Burning in 2017 and Temples of Madness in 2023 keeping the New Wave of British Heavy Metal tradition to the fore.

However it is probably that legendary Death and Destiny EP they’ll always be mainly associated with.

A few days ago I received an email from Sonic Age Records which listed a 40th anniversary edition of Death and Destiny with additional tracks Mythra recorded back in the day. Seemed it was a pre-order with a release via High Roller Records due at the end of May.

Checked out Amazon, found it there with immediate availability so ordered without hesitation. Duly arrived speedily. CD, jewel case and booklet in a nice slip case cover. A mini-poster of the cover artwork too. Noticed it showed a date of 2019.

Looked on High Roller – am assuming the version for pre-order is a re-release of the 2019 version. Either way, great to have it as over the thirteen tracks we have the four tracks of the original Dearth and Destiny EP and nine other tracks from Mythra’s recordings between 1979-1981.

All proper classic NWOBHM. Short, punchy cuts which all thump away hard and fast with some style. Big pulsing, churning riffs, breathless solos thudding bass and drums along with the fist-pumping choruses. All good stuff.

Have a listen to the Death and Destiny songs:

Always had a soft spot for Mythra since 1979. They remind me of Budgie somewhat with the riffage. Great stuff.

This 40th Anniversary package is a fine testament to one of the originals from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal days who fall in to the “should have been bigger” category.

Bag it from High Roller Records or Amazon:
