Steve Thorne: Malice in Plunderland Review

Steve Thorne Malice in PlunderlandSteve Thorne isn’t a name I’m familiar with. I bought the album after being attracted by the spectacular art work – which gives something of a non-too subtle hint as to what the album may be about with the clown figure up front and the Houses of Parliament in the background (can you guess?).

On reading that Steve says that Malice in Plunderland is: “dedicated to the unalienable right of free speech and the end of worldwide government deception and tyranny” my guess was correct. Was yours?

Yes – the lyrics deal with Steve’s take on the main events of the past three years or so from a certain what we’ll call “medical emergency” through to various subsequent what we’ll call “ongoing political issues” here in the UK and beyond.

All very well observed with Steve’s lyrics on point and pulling no punches.

Rubble and Dust is a nicely paced opener. The title track is an up-tempo edgy yet melodic song with an infectious chorus and a well-placed guitar solo and so it continues throughout with lots of variation in song style and delivery.

The album draws you in somewhat with songs such as Cup of Truth, Who or Where You Are and These Clowns in particular enjoyable not least the lyrics and how cutting and identifiable they are.

Overall it’s generally stripped down and reasonably laid back sort of melodic prog and an easy listen full of catchy melody and hooks with some tasteful guitar solos thrown in. The sort of album which grows on you with repeat listens. I like it plenty after driving around with it in the car for a week or so.

Here’s the preview video giving a taste of what you can expect from Malice in Plunderland:

For a speculative purchase it’s a winner in my book. Steve hits the nail very much on the head lyrically with how he gives his spin on the past three years and the music isn’t bad either.
