New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, Classic and Progressive Rock

Wayward Sons. Ghosts of Yet to Come Review.

Wayward Sons Ghosts of Yet to ComeWent to see UFO in Holmfirth recently. After the usual pre-gig curry around the corner from the Picturedrome we wandered in just in time to see the support bounce on stage. I had no idea who they were however the front man looked familiar.

Peering through the half-light it looked like Toby Jepson. Confirmed by my mate who has better eye sight than I do. So now curious to discover what the former Little Angels bloke had put together with his new band Wayward Sons.

Most certainly not disappointed. Although blighted by the usual “muddy” mix afforded to support acts, the band shone through displaying excellent, full-blooded, meaty rock with some swagger and humour.

Made a mental note to buy the album as soon as I got home. What a good decision that has been!

Toby’s on to a winner with Wayward Sons. A solid, tight band pushed forward by a fine guitarists who, up on that Holmfirth stage, looked like a 1970s Rick Wakeman. The boy can play sure enough.

Ghosts of Yet to Come offers up ten “proper” rock songs each as good as one another. Invigorating and fresh.

Big chords and riffs to the fore punching things along. Toby in fine voice and writing some intelligent, clever and humorous lyrics.

A big, swaggering sound comes as standard along with the infectious, foot tapping beats and general “big” feel of everything.

Here’s the video for Alive – ignore the cheesy “acting” and listen to how good the song is.

There’s nine more cuts just as good on the album.

Whereas the Little Angels (in my opinion) were a bit inconsistent, that’s certainly not the case with Wayward Sons. Well written, well performed, consistently good, instantly likeable, vibrant and infectious proper rock with attitude.

A bit of a nod back to the 1980s but with a brash, up to date modern freshness. Toby’s on to a winner here.

I have zero hesitation Wayward Sons Ghosts of Yet to Come a stone-cold done deal classic.
