New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, Classic and Progressive Rock

Avi Rosenfeld Very Heepy Very Purple VII

You’ll find elsewhere on here reviews of some of Avi’s earlier albums in his Very Heepy, Very Purple series. A few days ago number VII in the series arrived through the door for me to check out.

Avi is nothing if not prolific, that’s for sure. The bloke gets albums out at some pace – all the more notable as on the Heepy/Purple stuff he writes the lot himself and plays a mean guitar.

And still finds time to manage the whole process involving guest musicians from all over the place.

Wearing his classic rock influences proudly on his sleeve yet again, Very Heepy Very Purple VII gives us ten more songs in the style (but without copying) of those bands as a sort of ongoing homage.

Not hard to hear other influences such as Gillan, Dio and (in my opinion) White Spirit – for those of you who remember their sole album with much fondness.

Big guitars and big swirling organs and keys bring a proper classic rock/seventies feel to proceedings. For old farts like me who grew up on Uriah Heep and the link it’s a pleasure to listen to a guy like Avi – who is an excellent guitarist, put so much effort in to continually coming up with songs in the vein of his heroes as a labour of love.

There’s a slight “mystical” feel going on too along with machine gun drumming and meaty bass lines.

The mystical feel reflected in some of the song titles too – Walls of Castle Black, Caesars, Castle Knights from Edinburgh for example.

Want a taster: Check out the closing track – Tail Gunner. Close your eyes as you listen and travel back to the 1970s.
