New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, Classic and Progressive Rock

Sweet Crisis Live From the Junction Cambridge Review.

Along with the first rate Carousel Vertigo CD (reviewed here), PR man Matt included a live CD by a band called Sweet Crisis. A trio from Cambridge formed a couple of years or so ago.

The press blurb promised “an incendiary mix of great beats and riffs”. Hmmmm, best give it a listen I thought.

So I have. Quite a few times. I wanted to like it, do like parts of it however in my opinion it doesn’t match up to the “great beats and riffs”.

Mostly to me it comes over as a slightly jumbled affair which can’t decide if it wants to be hard rock, funk, blues or a bit trippy.

There’s a cover of Last Night a DJ Saved My Life – which may be tongue in cheek – but did little for me.

Ways of Your Love is a reasonable tune with a bit of a repetitive feel to it and some not bad guitar work when it gets going. Here’s a video of the band performing the song.

I do like Rapture, which follows the above, however the rest of it does not do it for me save the closer – Last Man on Earth. An up tempo melodic rocker with a nice riff and hook to it.

Whilst Sweet Crisis is not my bag, they might be yours. Why not check ‘em out anyway to see if they hit the spot for you. The vid above will give you a flavour.

The album is out on 29 September. It’s available as a download from Amazon, where you can listen to snippets of each song to help make your mind up.

Matt tells me that the band is working on a debut studio album which is planned for release early next year and will be a “different kettle of fish”. In the interests of keeping an open mind and objectivity I’ll give it a listen.

Next up here should be back to NWOBHM land with the new Lionheart due out soon. And Desolation Angels are back with a new release too which should be through the door shortly. Reviews will follow.
