Evil Hunter: Lockdown Review

Evil Hunter LockdownEvil Hunter hail from Spain. Lockdown is the band’s second album. And it’s a cracker. Eight punchy heavy rockers with a side order of melody and some thrilling shredding going on.

Thanks to the band for contacting me and sending over a CD. So glad they did. It’s my pleasant surprise album of the year so far.

There’s no messing about here. Evil Hunter get to the point with the opening riff of the opening song – Guardian Angel – and don’t let the pace drop at all.

Indeed – Guardian Angel is a majestic punch of cutting riffs, short yet blazing solos, thunderous rhythm section and some powerful vocals. Oh – and a tasty chorus which is rather infectious. On first listen I was hooked.

You’ll Never Walk Alone continues the assault with another very well done mixture of those cutting/slashing/punchy riffs, on point shredding and the melodic element making it oh so enjoyable.

And on it goes throughout the entire album in a similar fashion – although each song is different and each is delivered and performed with energy and enthusiasm. It all come across as the band having a fine time in the studio recording with that enthusiasm being transferred to the outcome.

Check out Fear Them All. Another fine example of what Evil Hunter have to offer here on Lockdown. A proper hammer of heaviness with attitude and a spot of melody.

And to show they are not all about the punchy heavy stuff there are parts of a couple of tracks which fool the listener in to thinking “here’s a slower ballad type cut” – until the breakout arrives. All skilfully done.

I like this album plenty. It’s been on a heavy rotation in my evening listening for about a week since the CD arrived from the band. Can’t stop listening to it.

The entire album is a hit. So much to enjoy in each song. Instantly accessible, energetic heaviness with attitude and melody.

With the eight songs coming in at a bit under 40 minutes it’s the ideal length. With Lockdown, Evil Hunter have an album of (forgive me the cliché) “all killer and no filler”. Good on them for making it about quality.

I highly recommend that you check the band out. Here’s where you can do that:
