New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, Classic and Progressive Rock

Chevy: The Taker Gets the Rock Candy Treatment.

Chevy The TakerChevy was a notable addition to the list of one-album bands from the early 1980s New Wave of British Heavy Metal scene. That one and only album has been given the full-on bells and whistles of a re-issue by the Rock Candy crew – but before that, a brief potted history of Chevy for the purposes of this blog and your visual delectation (!!).

Evolving from an earlier band by the name of Cupid’s Inspiration, Chevy was the name they took on being “re-born” as a hard hitting rock act in the early mists of NWOBHM. They had the riffs, sure, though what set them apart from their luminaries was a more complex sounds that was tinged with a bit of Southern rock/boogie and sometimes a sort of Wishbone Ash type vibe. Made for an interesting mixture and got them noticed.

And it got them a cut on the classic/infamous (depending on your point of view……) Metal for Muthas Volume II which was a springboard for many NWOBHM bands at the time. Better things appears to be on the horizon as Chevy headed in to the studio to record what would be their sole offering as far as a full sized slab of vinyl goes. Looked dead promising too with a heavyweight producer twiddling the nobs. That was John Stronach who, if memory serves, had worked with the great Sammy Hagar – happy to be corrected if that’s wrong. It was a long time ago……

The album – The Taker – came out in 1980 to not inconsiderable critical note and healthy reviews. For a while it looked like it might take Chevy on to bigger and better things though as with many bands back then it didn’t work out that way and the band was soon no more.

The Taker has been fondly remembered by many old farts like me and now we all have the opportunity to get our ears around it again thanks to those fine types at Rock Candy Records who have re-issued it with their usual comprehensiveness. Fully remastered, some bonus tracks and all that.

Rediscover an old NWOBHM classic that’s a bit different or discover it for the first time to see what it’s all about. Either way – good stuff.
