Devils Answer: The Devil is My Dad Review

devils_answer_the_devil_is_my_dadThanks to Andro Coulton at Yyper Records for sending me this one to review. What can I tell you about Devils Answer? The press blub says that they are an energetic three-piece rock band from Pembrokeshire, Wales.

And they play music from ballads to heaver rock. The Devils is My Dad, I believe, is there debut album. It’s due out through Vyper on 20 July.

On my first couple of listens I couldn’t work it out at all. So many different styles. The rock-out in yer face heavy stuff, the ballad style stuff, a bit of power-pop.

Even a bit of C&W going on. I couldn’t decide if the band is for real or having a bit of a joke. Or couldn’t make up their minds what they wanted to be.

Then after about five spins I started to get it. It started to make sense and it grew on me considerably. Though do be advised that some of the lyrics are, er, “choice” so if you may be easily offended…….now you know.

The Devil is My Dad is, in my opinion after a good few listens, a very clever album. A bit tongue in cheek too which is the type of humour which sits well with me. Pembrokeshire’s answer to Steel Panther indeed…..!

A wide selection of songs from the straight ahead rock with some kick behind it to the more subtle stuff and that C&W style song. All in all powerful, catchy, ironic, clever, fun, different. The little in between song interludes add to the intrigue and set up the listen for what’s coming next. Fits together well once it starts to sink in.

Check out Knockin’ At Your Back Door for example. Unsubtle lyrics, a rollicking fun riff with some sleaze and attitude, changes in pace and anthemic style vocals. A sort of a tricked up Kiss. Wasted All the Time in a similar vein.

Perhaps the best way for me to try and give you an idea of what Devils Answer are all about is to let the video do the talking. Here they are performing Wasted All the Time at the Live and Unsigned band competition.

Now, if you like what you’ve heard and see and fancy an album which is much deeper than you might think I do suggest you check out Devils Answer some more. They’ve grow on me so do give them a try.
