This is the third of the three CDs I was recently sent for review around bands from Greece.
Here we have Fragments of a ruined Mind by Terra Incognita. Make no mistake – this is a huge album. Superb heavy/progressive/symphonic rock and a concept album to boot!
That concept being about main character of Strahd: a story of betrayal, love, loyalty, death and in the end…the eternal damnation.
It’s a marvellous musical recipe. Billy Vass puts in a towering vocal performance.
It’s all there – power, range, variation, feeling yet restrained without any unnecessary histrionics. Measured throughout. Compares to “Sir” Russell Allen.
The fretwork from Manos Kyritloglou is similarly excellent. Shreds all over the album to stamp his mark. And like the vocals, the solos are nicely measured to fit the songs.
Check out also the expert rhythm guitar from Stellios Zoulias. Non-stop crisp chords bigging out the sound and driving things along superbly.
The bass and drum work from Tolis Avgeros and Dimitris Kokonezis respectively adds to the overall listening experience.
A slick production job too. A towering listen. This band is “hot”. Fragments of a Ruined Mind is in my opinion right up there with anything the likes of Symphony X have done. The press blurb talks about Black Sabbath influences. That’s evident also.
