New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, Classic and Progressive Rock

10 Rogue Serpentine Review

10 Rogue SerpentineSent a review copy of this a few days ago. Curious. Not heard of 10 Rogue prior. Now pleased I have heard of them now….perhaps you will be too after reading.

The blurb accompanying the CD informed me that the band is from South Africa and now base themselves in Belgium.

And that Serpentine is their debut album. And a jolly good one at that! Much promise is displayed.

Thirteen cuts of mostly muscular rock yet with an ability to vary the style of delivery to include soaring hooks, memorable melodies, a bit of ballardry (ooops, made up a word) and even hints of punk/grunge/rap in places.

There’s surely a hit single in here somewhere too amongst the more catchier songs. And not forgetting the meaty riffage and tasty solo work. The “complete” album if you will.

Erased is a fine opener. In yer face from the first note. Big, chunky chords, meaty riff, direct, an urgent burst of fretwork and a hook which goes directly to the brain. No messing about here.

Check out the video. Filmed in that well known hotbed of rock ‘n’ roll excess – yes, Ashby de-la Zouch. What do you mean, where’s that…….?

That gives way to the slightly sleazy Amphetamine. Dark Angel Princess ups the ante again.

Other, of many, highlights include I am the Light with its melodic sort of “power pop” feel through the chugging riff and monster chorus and the break-neck closer of When Ya Down. Oh – and Unscathed reminds me of 1980s “hair metal”.

10 Rogue is a band you owe it to yourself to check out. The aural evidence on Serpentine is compelling.
