The Obscure NWOBHM Releases label has been a bit quiet recently.
However they’ve hit the spot again by living up to their label name and somehow uncovering another couple of bands who tried to set out for success in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal days in the early 1980s but didn’t make it.
This time the two bands in question are Sapphire and Zayus.
A couple of bands so obscure and under the radar I can’t tell you much about either of them.
Sapphire lasted a couple of years and recorded a couple of demos before calling it a day.
This anthology consists of thirteen tracks over both demos.
Here’s Battle for Freedom. It sounds a bit like Saracen I think.
As for Zayus, they were from Sheffield, around for the same time as Sapphire and also put down a couple of demos.
Here’s Angel of Hell. More of a straightforward in your face typical NWOBHM style.
As usual with the label, these CDs are limited edition runs of just 500 copies each. Order directly from the label here:

Obscure NWOBHM Releases continue to unearth NWOBHM-era bands who had the promise if not the breaks and long may they continue to do so.
The Vardis 100 M.P.H ‘79 Revisited album should be here in about ten days from date of posting. More glorious vintage New Wave of British Heavy Metal from Steve Zodiac and the chaps with previously unrealised studio sessions and whatnot.
Naturally I’ll review on receipt. In the meantime, check out the Sapphire and Zayus anthologies.
