Edenya The Secret Destination You Are Looking For Review

Edenya The Secret Destination You Are Looking ForA surprise envelope arrived the other day. It was from France. That usually means a CD from a band in the Bad Dog Promotions stable has been sent to me.

I was correct (thanks AC)…..the band is Edenya and the CD is their third album entitled The Secret Destination You Have Been Looking For.

The ten songs seem to alternate between the shortish floaty, ethereal acoustically based folksy pieces and the longer, heavier multi-faceted suites. Enough here for anyone to enjoy whether you prefer your folky stuff or things a bit heavier.

Back from the Endless Seas opens things up with one of those ethereal acoustic based pieces. The vocals from Ingrid Denis are haunting. As they are throughout the album.

The Outing builds gradually from the piano before the bass comes in, the drums and gradually expands in to a nice rocked up song with crisp drumming, the big riffing guitar and a bit of violin even. Very nice.

Little Girl takes things back to the haunting acoustic territory including some nice orchestration.

Next up is Foreign Ground. This one’s huger. Eastern tinged intro and throughout. Powerful riffage, thumping drums and basslines, big melodies. The guitar is powerful and also nicely measured as the song ebbs and flows between the heavier parts and the quieter parts mid-song leading up to more big guitar and a stunning solo. Simply glorious. Here’s the video:

The title track is a hypnotic, orchestrated, hypnotic instrumental. Constant rhythmic drumbeat and a brooding burst of guitar towards the end.

Three shortish folk/rock numbers follow, one of which is a lush instrumental which lead up to My Burden, which packs in so much changes of pace and style in to ten minutes of wonderfully arranged song writing and musicianship.

A huge, stunning ten minutes of acoustics, big guitar washes, atmospherics, funky bass, huge riffs and understated power as things brood and build the intensity before easing back a bit then building up again for the big finish, more guitars and another fine solo.

Then the closer of The Lady ends it with another of those shortish, haunting acoustic-based pieces.

With The Secret Destination You Are Looking for, Edenya have a most fine album. And a real grower.

It’s heavy progressive folk with ambient atmospherics. That might sound a bit daft – though it works and there are plenty of chunky riffs, big chords and biting guitars to enjoy. My thanks to AC at Bad Dog Promotions for arranging to send it to me.
