New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, Classic and Progressive Rock

Gang Live Is All Review

Gang Live is AllHere’s a 40 or so minute slab of live, in yer face French style NWOBHM courtesy of Gang. The band’s performance at the 2014 SOS Festival, Manchester where they appeared with other New Wave of British Heavy Metal luminaries such as Tyson Dog. Must have been some show.

I enjoyed Gang’s last album, Inject the Venom, with the obvious NWOBHM influences and style coupled with a brutal non-nonsense heaviness and some fine fretwork. So the opportunity to be sent a review copy of Live Is All was most welcome. Thanks Sylvain.

The raw power of the band is captured well here which adds to the atmosphere and listening pleasure. I suspect very little (or perhaps no) studio trickery meaning probably as true to being there as, er, being there.

An enthusiasm is conveyed throughout. Big, big guitars grring and powering away with the frantic yet subtle solo work. Monster drums and bass at the back and a wild (in a good way) vocal showing. This is “proper” NWOBHM with a Gallic twist. The overall style is unmistakable as it powers along delivering the goods. Heavy, loud, powerful, melodic…………and very enjoyable.

Found a video of Gang blasting out All The Fool Around. They open Live is All with it so you can see and hear their brand of NWOBHM-influenced heaviness which abounds on the album.

The crowd seem to love it too. Why not – it’s rather good. Live albums can sometimes suffer from not being truly “live” though that isn’t the case here. All the Fool Around judders right away with the big, catchy chorus and then it’s crash, band wallop all the way. I’ve had it with me in the car for about a week. Good driving music! The boys find time for a breathless Iron Maiden cover shredding their way through their version of Total Eclipse.

For fans of NWOBM or uncomplicated heavy metal anywhere. Gang is all. A proper good time listen and a fine example of a band coming in to themselves on stage. Wouldn’t it be nice to see a tour with Shakin’ Street for a spot of “double French”? Not had that since school…….!
