New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, Classic and Progressive Rock

Nightwing: Five Disc Box Set Spanning 1980-1985 Coming in August

Another box set to look forward to – particularly for us old New Wave of British Heavy Metal types to get nostalgic about.

This one is of Nightwing’s five albums from the 1980s at the peak of NWOBHM.

It is scheduled for an August 2026 release – just a couple of months or so from date of posting. We have Cherry Red to thank for it – they do keep pumping out this sort of stuff.

Despite being busy with the album releases, Nightwing were one of those NWOBHM-period bands who certainly had the ability without quite getting the breaks.

You know the drill…….big name support slots with the likes of Gillan, critical acclaim blah blah blah though not translating in to big numbers of units shifting, though still having respectable sales.

Musically it’s all very solid stuff. I’d say leaning towards the likes of Saracen and White Spirit. Chunky riffs, nice use of synths and keys to prog/pomp it up a bit. Take Long Hard Road for example, the song giving its title to this box set. Here is is:

Perhaps the frequent line-up changes may not have helped Nightwing’s cause with people coming and going. Max Bacon was in on vocals for a brief spell before he went off to join short lived “supergroup” GTR with Steve Hackett and Steve Howe.

I’m looking forward to this Nightwing set. I’d all but forgotten about them until the email from Cherry Red arrived showing it in their release schedule.

The five albums included are:
Something in the Air (1980)
Black Summer (1982)
Stand Up and Be Counted (1983)
My Kingdom Come (1984)
Night of Mystery Alive! Alive! (1985)

My pre-order is in. I will of course review on receipt.
