Cherry Red/HNE Records continue to crank out their always quality box sets of vintage New Wave of British Heavy Metal. This time it’s the mighty Satan with a four CD set spanning 1981 to 1985.
Based in the NWOBHM hotbed of the Newcastle area, Satan burst on to the scene with their debut album of Court in the Act.
Brutally fast and heavy, the album pretty much set the template for what would become speed or thrash metal somewhat akin to Raven who also hailed from Newcastle.
Satan had something of an identity crisis over some subsequent years after Court in the Act changing name to Blind Fury and Pariah before reforming as Satan and releasing the Life Sentence album in 2013.
Their most recent album being the biting Songs in Crimson a couple of years ago in 2024. That album had all the classic elements and showed the band remained ferocious.
As to this box set – as per the title it covers the early years of Satan’s career. So what’s in the box…..?
CD1: Court in the Act – their classic debut album from 1983 with three bonus tracks.
CD2: A couple of demos from the 1980s and three live songs from the Earthquake festival in 1984
CD3: A thirteen song set live from a performance in Eindhoven, Holland in 1983
CD4: The Out of Reach album from 1985 after the name change to Blind Fury
And as always with Cherry Red box sets, a booklet with all sorts of photographs and stuff to read about the band.

I note from the label’s web site they say this is the “first volume of complete recordings”, so perhaps we have more to come?
