An envelope hit the doormat the other day which looked like it contained a CD.
Not expecting one with stuff I have on order not due, I opened it to find another one from the Bad Dog Promotions stable which Anne-Claire arranged for the band to send to me.
The band is Polychrome. Their album is Someday, which was released a couple of weeks or so ago. Polychrome hail from France and Someday is their second album.
They say the theme is exploring how we relate to time with each song capturing a short moment of a day.
It’s quite well done, flowing progressive rock with some jazzy influences and some funky stuff too making for listen with plenty of variety.
The musicianship is excellent with the guitar hitting the spot when it cuts lose with some nifty, dexterous soloing.
The keyboards mix in with it well giving some ambience as does the jazzy/funky bass and the drumming is crisp. The vocals get their point over well too delivering the themes explored over the course of the album.
The mostly instrumental opener has a bit of an edgy feel in an atmospheric way with the keyboard surges.
I Feel Good builds up to some chunky guitar and nicely fluid solos as the tune ebbs and flows between the quieter parts and the energetic. It will, er, make you feel good as the title suggests. Have a listen:
Daydreamer meanders in to jazzy territory then The Dog and the Frog reminds me a bit of say an early 1970s style melodic psych. Another day features more of the fluid guitar – as goes the jaunty Give me Five which goes “full prog” with synths and that excellent guitar over the funky drumming.
The remaining three tracks each continue the recipe of shifting, varied, atmospheric prog.
With Someday, Polychrome have an album of generally of easy(ish) listening which grew on me with repeat listens.
Perhaps one to listen to if you’ve had a tough day and want to relax and unwind with. It had that sort of effect on me.
My thanks to AC and the band for sending it over to me. If you’d like to check it out further, digital and CD versions on Polychrome’s BandCamp page:
