Raddar: Beacon Review

Raddar BeaconA few years ago, Gary “Razar” King contacted me to introduce his band Raddar and sent me a copy of their CD titled Transmission. It’s excellent. I reviewed it here.

Raddar and Gary have been around for decades and know their stuff. It’s classic hard rock with crisp riffs, big hooks and melodies. Classy stuff. As their web site says: “Rock as big as Texas” – which is where they are from.

Gary has now sent me over Raddar’s third album which was released in 2023 and is titled Beacon. Just like Transmission, it has that classic hard rock style with the hooks and melodies.

Gary and fellow band member Randee Lee have put together a most fine album. If classic hard rock is your bag, Beacon will indeed be music to your ears.

On Beacon, they have the great Bodo Schopf on the drum stool. He puts in his usual stylish performance providing the foundation for Gary and Randee to do their stuff. And there’s nice use of organ swirls and washes which big up and add to the feel nicely.

Watching the World kicks the album off with a big chunky rocker with an irresistible hook and chorus. Not forgetting the nicely measured guitar solo.

Each of the ten songs do not disappoint. Forgive me a cliché – Beacon is all killer, no filler. All hard rocking and melody driven.

At around three quarters of an hour the running time is right and the quality and performance of the songs holds the attention throughout.

Check out The Only One:

Nine more of where that came from on the album.

Perhaps the closing duo of the title track and Go For Broke are the standouts here, though the entire album for my ears is a standout from start to finish.

Rock as big as Texas indeed. I recommend it highly.

Gary tells me Raddar have now released five albums. Why not check them all out on Raddar’s web site as I believe some are download only and available from the music and EPK tabs:

Gary and Randy are busy chaps with their own stuff – which is good too. Check out what they are up to here:
