Rhino’s Revenge II Review

Rhino's Revenge IILong-time Status Quo bass man Rhino Edwards releases Rhino’s Revenge II – the imaginatively titled follow-up to Rhino’s Revenge. See what he did there with the naming…..? A note of thanks to Matt from Savage Gringo PR for the review copy.

What a jolly fine album M. Edwards has put together. A proper good-time rock album with a sort of poppy/bluesy/pub type feel with some very witty, dry humour and clever, cutting lyrics about various aspects of modern life.

A nice feel good album which, one might say, even pokes a bit of fun at his day job through One Note Blues (video later). It’s clear from the first listen that everyone’s having huge dollops of fun making it and a bit of a family affair too.

Tomorrow is Today is a nice start and an ode to the struggles of coming off unspecified pharmaceutical substances. Famous is a nice upbeat hook-laden big-chorused power-pop on the celebrity culture (famous for being famous) with some very funny lyrics which hit the spot very well indeed.

All the Girls Love a B*stard sees Rhino rapping and again showing some very funny, keenly observed lyrics. Entertaining stuff all the way and not a little ironic. Then the style changes come in again with the likes of Cougar and Secretary. Back to straight ahead rockers concentrating on, well let’s just say female-related topics. No degree from the “right” university required to work out what the songs are about. Rhino again hitting the spot with more keenly ironic lyrics.

Every bloke can identify with My Name is Stan with us slackers having our own anthem – Busy Doing Nothin’. One Note Blues is as close as this gets to Quo. It could be Quo, but it’s not. It’s Rhino Rock. Here’s what it sounds like:

Black Widows and Take ‘Em Down close out a hugely entertaining album in powerful style. Top marks to Mr. Edwards on this album. Not being a Quo fan myself I had no prior influences or pre-conceived ideas. A fresh listen with an open perspective and a pleasant surprise to discover such a fun and entertaining listen. For Quo completists and anyone who fancies a slab of good-time honest to goodness straight ahead rock with some curves thrown in too. A recommended listen indeed.
