Woken up this morning to a spot of unexpected New Wave of British Heavy Metal news -Sweet Savage reappear out of nowhere with a new album titled Bang slotted for release via Ear Music on 12 September 2025.
The band formed in 1979 and set out to make their mark on the emerging NWOBHM movement. That early line-up featured a young Vivian Campbell on guitar, who we all know went on to have a stint with Dio and subsequently Def Leppard where he’s been since the early 1990s.
Whilst Sweet Savage bagged some tasty support slots and worked hard they didn’t have much to show for their efforts back then.
A single which was limited to a thousand copies and a self-released effort of four songs from (I think) a session for the much missed Friday Rock Show. TV on the Radio if you recall.
Sweet Savage split in 1983 though little did they know at the time that Killing Time from that single would change things a bit…..
A few years later, Metallica included a cover of Killing Time on their The Unforgiven single and interest in Sweet Savage was renewed.
They reformed with original member Ray Haller at the helm and with current Deep Purple guitarist Simon McBride in the line-up. Two albums followed in the 1990s before splitting again.
Another reformation happened around 2008 and an album – Regeneration – in 2011.
Now here we are some fourteen years later in July 2025 with the news that Sweet Savage return with Bang which is due for release on 12 September.
Ray Haller remains with Marty McCloskey and Phil Edgar. If you’d like to whet your appetite in anticipation of the album’s release, here’s the band’s video for the title track:
