Tygers of Pan Tang: Animal Instinct 2024 Reissue Review

Tygers of Pan Tang Animal InstinctWe all know, don’t we, that the Tygers of Pan Tang have been with us since the kick off of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal back in the late 1970s.

Their initial run of albums back then nothing short of spectacular without pitching them up to Iron Maiden or Saxon levels.

A few issues with their record company triggered a split in the early 1980s before an unsuccessful reformation in the mid-1980s with a much revised line-up and the largely forgettable The Wreck-Age and Burning in the Shade albums before splitting again.

Spring forward to the start of this century and original Tyger Robb Weir, Blues Brothers style, got the band back together in another form and after a few more line up changes things settled down with another vocalist and the monster set of pipes of vocalist Jack Meille.

Then in 2008, the “new” Tygers would put out a most fine comeback album titled Animal Instinct. An album bristling with power and poise throughout. A huge slice of heaviness with the NWOBHM roots.

Crushing riffs, big solos, thumping rhythm section and those huge Meille vocals. Just like their early 1980s output,

Animal Instinct has recently been reissued (November 2024) with a new mix and it sounds superb.

Rock Candy is a massive opener. Relentless stuff. Nice and heavy with the blazing guitar work from Weir and Dean Robinson. Live for the Day has the bass of Brian West and drums of Craig Ellis merging together to drive the song laying the foundations for Meille to showcase off his vocal range.

More huge guitar on If You See Kay and Hot Blooded – as there is throughout the remainder of the album. Plenty of measured power which is all tightly performed and a thrilling listen with this remix amping it up further.

Check out Dark Rider as an example:

Animal Instinct should have put them in the big time. Whilst it did not, it was certainly a career saver and the Tygers subsequent output has been consistently excellent such as Ritual and Bloodlines.
