New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, Classic and Progressive Rock

Wild Horses Box Set Due February 2026

Wild Horses Standing Our GroundCherry Red Records will release a 6CD box set of Wild Horses output from the 1980s on 27th February 2026.

Wild Horses of course being the short-lived band formed by Brian Robertson and Jimmy Bain after their exists from Thin Lizzy and Rainbow respectively.

Whilst the Horses’ style was not full on New Wave of British Heavy metal, they were around at the time so we’ll say they were NWOBHM albeit loosely.

This upcoming box set is titled Wild Horses Standing Our Ground 1978 -1981 and comprises of the following:

CD1: Their first album in the original mix and a 2025 remix
CD2: Standing Your Ground in the original max and a 2025 remix
CD3: All sorts of first bonus tracks – demos, alternatives etc.
CD4: All sorts of Standing Your Ground bonus tracks – demos, alternatives etc.
CD5: A live performance from the old Marquee club
CD6: Live in Tokyo 1980

Given the names involved they were one of those bands that surely should have been huge, though were not. Jimmy Bain, Brian Robertson, Neil Carter, Clive Edwards, John Lockton, Reuben and Lawrence Archer etc. and they still couldn’t make a go of it. The multiple line-up changes may not have helped.

I’m on record in this post with my view of Wild Horses, which isn’t entirely complimentary.

In my opinion their first album is far from good. The second album is much better though with some filler.

Here’s Criminal Tendencies from their first album:

However, I will be buying this box set and have pre-ordered. You may be wondering why if I have such a mixed opinion of the two studio albums. Well, mainly because of the two live performances.

The reason being that way back in 1979 I went to see Rush at Stafford Bingley Hall as they played a couple of dates their prior to them returning the following year for the Permanent Waves tour.

Wild Horses were the support act at Stafford and went down well as I recall. Well enough for me to buy both their albums and being generally disappointed with them. And despite repeated efforts over the years to get to like them, only Standing Your Ground does it for me for the most part.

Even so, this six disc box set will be a nice addition to the collection as Cherry Red do them so well. And at time of posting, the pre-order price is a reasonable £35 or thereabouts. Not bad for six CDs eh?
