I’ve been emailed by Dean from Briar to tell me that their Take on the World album from 1986 has been re-issued by Battle Cry records. I’m pleased Dean got in touch as even though Briar are from the halcyon days of NWOBHM I have to admit being totally unaware of them – er, sorry about that guys…….
So what could I find out about Briar – I’ve emailed Dean for some background though for now I believe they formed in/about 1979 and started to make quite a name for themselves on the (then) burgeoning Birmingham heavy metal scene eventually being somewhat championed by some well-connected industry names, some Radio 1 airplay and even a support slot to Stryper, who according to at least one reviewer, were blown away by Briar.
Alas, like a good many of their contemporaries of the time they became yet another New Wave of British Heavy Metal band who had the moves though not the success and what recording output there was is on the very bloody hard to find list.
Though now their much sought after Take on the World album is available on CD and includes a lyric booklet, rare photographs and even two bonus tracks take from a self-financed single which appeared in 1989. Here’s the track listing:
1. Take on the world.
2. Closing in.
3. Odd one out.
4. Everybody.
5. Always gonna love ya.
6. Lorraine.
7. Without you.
8. Keep on running.
9. Gimme all you got (bonus track).
10. Stop me foolin (bonus track).
If you’d like to get hold of a copy, Dean tells me that it’s available on eBay and here’s the link and it’s only eight quid. Have a look: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221103402853
