Blue Oyster Cult marked their half century in 2022 with a three night run at the Sony Hall in New York. On each night they played one of their first three albums straight through followed by a second set drawn from throughout their career.
Here we have the third night performance to complete the trilogy. The Cult’s masterpiece third album – Secret Treaties – then a sixteen song strong run through of classics and surprises all captured in this two CD and single DVD set.
Secret Treaties remains a stone cold timeless classic as strong as ever five decades after original release. To hear and see it played through live here is a treat.
The menacing Career of Evil and the riffage of Subhuman get things off to a cracking start. Dominance and Submission sublimely heavy. What an opening trio.
ME262 and the urgency of it possibly the fastest and heaviest song in BOC’s considerable cannon. Remember in the old days when played live and the use of the strobe lights? Glorious.
Cagey Cretins deliciously weird. Harvester of Eyes quite sinister then the marvellous semi-progginess of Flaming Telepaths with the haunting Astronomy to close it out featuring one of the great guitar solos you’ll hear anywhere.
Here’s the live video for Career of Evil:
The second set is a ripper also. Yes, of course Don’t Fear the Reaper is in there as always as is the super heavy Cities on Flame and Godzilla.
However worked in to this sixteen song Cult extravaganza are a few chucked in which you may not have been expecting.
Shooting Shark is smooth. Black Blade always been one of my favourites. Tenderloin and Sinful Love from Agents of Fortune make an appearance as does the lavish ballad of I Love the Night from Spectres and the jokey Joan Crawford.
And there are a couple from the band’s excellent The Symbol Remains “comeback” studio album from 2020. Train True and the instant class of The Alchemist. That’s a spectacular song up there with anything else BOC have done.
This is a classic rock band who continue to stand the test of time and with a back catalogue most other bands can only wish they had.
If you’re a BOC fan you’ll be more than familiar with the album and be snapping up this set. If you’re not familiar with the band – here’s where to start with a live performance of Secret Treaties and the following goodies.
