Way back in 1981 when the New Wave of British Heavy Metal was surging, Heavy Pettin emerged out of Glasgow seemingly having the chops to make it big.
Their brand of the chunky riffs, punchy power, big choruses and harmonies mixed in with a liberal sprinkling of glam rock influences was a bit different to the NWOBHM “norm” (if there was such a thing….) leaning towards perhaps what would emerge as “hair metal” before that was a thing.
Heavy Pettin’s debut album was superb and gained the band much attention.
Like many before them they were tagged as “the next big thing” and surely to follow the likes of NWOBHM counterparts Iron Maiden and the like up in to the stratosphere.
That looked even more likely as the band landed high profile support slots with Kiss and Ozzy.
A second album followed in 1985 with a slicker sound. Then came the career killer – the Eurovision Song Contest.
Yes – they had a go at the Eurovision cringefest in 1987. That flopped and their record company binned them.
Heavy Pettin split although their third album (recorded before the split) was released in 1989.
Now here we are at the start of September 2025 with the surprise news that next month the band will release their first album since almost four decades after The Big Bang.
It’s called Rock Generation. The title track is out now as a single. It’s very good too. Harks back to the early days yet sounds fresh and up to date. Plenty of thump, energy and swagger about it it too.
Fancy a listen – here’s the video.
The album is slotted for release on 24th October via Silver Lining Music. Throughout late October and early November, Heavy Pettin are touring with Uriah Heep and April Wine with dates in mainland Europe (mainly Germany).
