Joanovarc Ride of Your Life Review.

Joanovarc Ride of Your LifeWith thanks to Matt Reynolds from Savage Gringo PR for the review copy I am pleased to tell you a little about the debut album by Joanovarc.Ride of Your Life.

Four young ladies who know how to play proper rock with style, attitude, melody and more than a little bite.

Comparisons with Girlschool and The Runaways are impossible not to make given your reviewer harks back to the 1970s/1980s and cut his musical teeth listening to both bands which still feature regularly on his play-list.

And those comparisons are most certainly favourable. With this tasty debut album Joanovarc ably demonstrate a huge talent which should surely break out in to bigger things for them as the word gets out.

The title track kicks things off with an impossibly catchy riff before bouncing along with a h-u-g-e singalong chorus. Great. Dragon in the Sky has a sort of stop-start thing going on which works well and it has a kick to it too.

Here’s the video for White Trash. Demonstrates what Joanovarc has to offer nicely. Punches above its weight with the guitar up front and a nice solo. What’s not to like.

Seeds of Summer another melodic rocker with a hard side. Live Rock ‘n’ Roll will get in your head and stay there.

These girls have a variety to their approach too. Check out the bluesy Five Years (my personal favourite) with the soulful slow-burner feel to it. And the bass-driven funk-groove of Work.

The performance tight. Drum and bass locked together as one. Chunky rifferama and nice lead work which fits in without being showy. A strong vocal performance too. Powerful and rangy. The slick production helps to give a “beefy” feel throughout. Most agreeable.

Knowing nothing about the band when Matt sent the CD I had no idea what to expect. After the first listen driving to a meeting in the car I was hooked. Made me nostalgic for the Hit and Run/Queens of Noise old days whilst thinking to myself here is the twenty-first century updated answer.

Joanovarc go down as my pleasant unexpected discovery of 2016. Perhaps yours too. Ride of Your Life deserves a place in your collection. Nay, demands it……!
