New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, Classic and Progressive Rock

Sacred Alien: Legends 1980 – 1983 Review.

Sacred Alien Legends 1980 - 1983Here’s a real “under the radar” band from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal days – and a real (as we say in Yorkshire) good ‘un. Their name: Sacred Alien.

Hailing from the Manchester area, Sacred Alien buzzed around for a few years in the early 1980s, like many bands back then promising much and delivering little without the breaks. I believe just one solitary single self-released in 1981 limited to 1,000 copies.

The band did cut a few demos and thanks to Skol Records ten songs have been rescued and available for the first time.

Scared Alien were perhaps a bit too “out there” for their time and traditional NWOBHM. Their style being rather unique I’d say.

The heaviness is there though there are plenty of other influences in the mix. There’s a quirky/spacey feel (probably not surprising given the band’s name) and in parts one can hear early Rush, late period Be Bop Deluxe, Ultravox, Red Noise and glam-rock too.

Have a listen to From Both Sides of the Globe. It captures all the above – and is the intro not something which could have fitted nicely on Fly By Night?

The single – Spiritual Planet is a nice spiky/catchy song with the accompanying cut on the single – Energy in something of a monster. It’s so good there are two versions of it.

Heck, it’s all good. Check out Portrait of a Saddened Mind as another fine example of how the different styles come together. And Energy and Eyes for the more straight ahead shorter, punchy stuff kicks in too.

So different, so enjoyable. A warning that the ancient demos haven’t cleaned up as well as some and the sound suffers for it – though don’t let that put you off discovering what a promising outfit Sacred Alien were in the early 1980s.
