If you like your classic rock with a modern feel then Vantage Point are for you!
The band hail from Scotland and have been around for a while – though remarkably remain relatively undiscovered, which is a bit of a mystery to this reviewer’s ears as they most certainly do “rock”.
A few months ago the band sent me a copy of their Collision Course EP and I liked that muchly (review here).
Now they’ve got in touch again with news of a new four-track EP due for release in early June comprising of four tracks – Just Want You, Laid Back Lad, Shine Your Light and To Cut a Long Story Short.
Four quite tremendous rockers with that sort of Whitesnake/Lizzy classic rock vibe from the old days all sounding fresh, packing a hefty punch and packing a lot in to fifteen minutes or so with special note to some first class shredding from Liam Kane.
Just Want You has a crunching riff throughout. A foot-tapper with a monster hook too. Driving rhythm guitar, tight drums/bass keeping it on groove, lung-busting vocals and this first example of Kane’s excellent fretwork.
Laid Back Lad is a similar vein this time with Lissa Robertson slotting in to the vocals and sounding fine.
Shine Your Light stretches things out a bit more and the band expand their style with a guest vocal from Mark Stewart and yet more of that shredtacular Liam Kane.
Now then – who remembers Spandau Ballet? Well, Vantage Point now throw in a cover of Spandau’s To Cut a Long Story Short. And does it not work – oh yes it does. Puts a whole new perspective to the song rocked up to eleven. I’m not normally a fan of covers – though VP make it their own and it’s killer.
I say check Vantage Point out as soon as you’ve read this post. Get yourself Just Want You when it’s out in a couple of weeks and some of their other output too. A proper rock band with the “right stuff”.
