Weird Biscuit Teatime DJDDAY Review

Weird Biscuit TeatimeYes – that is the correct title…..Weird Biscuit Teatime. It features the late, great Daevid Allen (Soft Machine, Gong etc.) and reached me about a week ago somewhat out of the blue.

Seeing Don Falcone – he of Spirits Burning and others – listed in the line up and as producer I figured he’d arranged for it to be sent to me, and my assumption proved correct. Thank you Don.

Weird Biscuit Teatime was a studio-based project which Daevid, Don and others worked on in the early years of this century.

They recorded two albums – this one being the first. The second, Elevenses, went out with the band’s name changed to Daevid Allen Weird Quartet.

Now here we are two decades further on with DJDDAY having a remaster and re-release with five bonus tracks.

If you’re familiar with Daevid’s early 1970s output with Gong you can probably take a guess as to what to expect from Weird Biscuit Teatime.

It’s not as outright spacey and trippy as say Angel’s Egg, being generally heavier approach with the driving rhythms.

Though all the familiar Gong-like sounds are there underneath with the pulsing and throbbing beats over the top.

Sort of extreme, dense, heavyish, trippy prog with some of the familiar Gong like stuff going on too. Not an easy listen at first though stick with it and it does become quite hypnotic and tribal in a strange, compelling way.

As an example, here’s Transhuman Future.

If, like me, you do often drift back to the early 1970s listening to Gong’s timeless Flying Teapot trilogy then this’ll be your bag.

Make yourself a nice cup of tea. Boil the kettle, warm the pot, when ready pour the tea in to the cup, then add milk and sugar to taste and stir. Drink whilst dunking the occasional Hobnob and listening for your very own Weird Biscuit Teatime.

Thanks again to to Don for sending a copy to me. Various formats available from Amazon here:
