Aldo Nova: Life and Times of Eddie Gage EP Review

Aldo Nova Eddie Gage EPAldo Nova gives us “a little preview” of his upcoming concept/rock opera (possibly autobiographical perhaps?) The Life and Times of Eddie Gage. And quite stupendous it is in terms of scale, scope, musical variety and all-around goodness.

If when the full scale product is released the remainder is as good as when we have here on this preview EP it’ll be a real treat. And quite some EP it is……10 songs with a running time around an hour.

I have the CD version – it’s a double. Nine tracks on one CD and one on the second CD.

Reading the booklet notes one gets the impression that Aldo’s doing whatever the hell he likes – and doing it do very well. Certainly over-delivering on this “little preview”.

We have excellent crackling rockers such as Hey Ladi Dadi and Free Your Mind. Glorious sweeping ballads, chunky riffing, powerful, passionate vocals and when Also cuts loose his soloing is intense and emotional. So much variety and never a dull moment. Holds the attention all the way through

The songs are deceptively complex also. Each listen you pick up on something you’ve not got from previous listens. And the production is as clean as the proverbial whistle.

Have a look at the video to Free Your Mind. How good is this?

Forgive me an over-used cliché – Aldo has “knocked it out of the park” here. It’s much more than enough to whet the appetite and crank up the anticipation for the full two-hour suite the full product is to comprise.

I hope the wait isn’t too long. In the meantime this 10 track preview EP will help the time pass with repeated listens. It’s that good.

Here in the UK the EP isn’t too easy to find on CD (my listening format of choice). Eventually got mine via an Amazon marketplace seller which took a while to arrive from somewhere in mainland Europe. If you prefer the streaming or MP3 format then those options are available – link below.
