Astrodot: Debut Album Review

AstrodotRecently put together a post after being contacted by Tommie Bouzianis from the “old days” when he was with Dynamitte Inc and also mentioning his new band Astrodot. The post is here if you’d like to read it.

Now, Astrodot’s debut album is a rather excellent affair so I figured it deserved a post if its own for me to tell you about it.

The band’s style is (arguably) a tad unusual in these times as it blends some nice rocky tunes infused with some tasty keys/synths which give it a sort of “retro electronic” feel. I like it plenty.

Astrodot are from Greece and in addition to Tommie on guitar and vocals consist of Billy Knight (Piano, Keyboards & vocals), Xenia Tunes (Backing vocals) George Matt (Bass) and Chris Toumanidis (Drums).

The album consists of fourteen songs with a total running time around an hour. An hour which passes quickly such is the music and the “skip” button is not required.

Misty Mornin’ chugs along nicely and has a big hook and melody to go with the riff. Very catchy stuff.

Drug Smuggler comes in at around seven minutes and is an early example of Astrodot’s ability to switch things up with its atmospheric, hypnotic eastern-tinged feel throughout.

Never Trust a Dyin’ Man is another fine chugging rocker with the keys alternating between the chopped riff and (like Misty Mornin’) catchy infectious melody. Have a listen.

J.D Dazze is another highlight – this one being a bit darker I suppose in the vocal style though with more excellent interplay with the guitar and keys/synths fitting together so well again.

The closer – Sarajevo – is described to me by Tommie as: “is a spooky psychedelic one with an edge of Hitchcok’s thriller movies. And indeed it is. A moody, atmospheric and slightly unsettling instrumental.

Astrodot are on to something here. It might not be what you’re expecting though it is different, refreshing and oh so enjoyable. It’s up to date with a sort of retro-80s tinge to it.

Do have a listen. Samples on Amazon to help make your mind up about downloading.
