Bomber: Nocturnal Creatures Review

Bomber Nocturnal CreaturesNocturnal Creatures is the debut album from Swedish band Bomber.

A glorious throw-back to 1980s style heaviness with a touch of glam rock and a touch of NWOBHM.

Everything is here which made the 1980s such a great decade for this type of rock. For those of you of a “certain age” like myself you’ll remember it well with fond nostalgia.

Bomber have smashed it here squarely on the head of the nail.

A big, big sound. Soaring vocals, huge back beat, clean, powerful, crisp chords and riffs, thrilling to the point solos, shout along choruses.

Each track is a mini-anthem. Truly spectacular from start to finish.

To start things off there’s a short spoken intro in the style of the late, great Vincent Price. Very creepy. Then we’re off in to Zarathustra. A monster guitar-driven thruster of a track chock full of the riffs, huge hooks, lung-busting vocals and glorious soloing backed up by pumping big drums and throbbing bass.

Fever Eyes and Black Pants Magic (what a song title…..) venture in to good old glam rock territory with a touch of Sweet and T-Rex.

Then comes The Tiger – don’t let the gentle intro fool you in to thinking it’s a soppy ballad in waiting. It’s not. You’ll see (rather hear) why when the big guns come in. A massive muscle song which drives along with more of the hooks, power, melody and all round feel-goodness. Have a listen:

The remaining four tracks are equally soaring including a bit of an unusual (in a good way) instrumental. The closer –Aurora – brings the album to a close in pumping, throbbing style with so much packed in to the six minutes it’s breath taking.

A thoroughly enjoyable album harking back to the big classic/hard/glam rock of the 1980s when stuff like this was everywhere – and long may it be back thanks to Bomber. So refreshing to hear it. After posting this I’m going to listen to it again…….!
