New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, Classic and Progressive Rock

Dimorfia Utopia Album Review.

Dimorfia UtopiaReceived a review copy of this album – along with two others which I’ll review separately – though Dimorfia first.

What can I tell you about the band? They hail from Thessaloniki in Greece with their music described as heavy/power/symphonic metal. And I believe Utopia is their debut album.

It’s a competent effort and the heavy/power/symphonic tag is about right. A tough of prog thrown in there too.

The guitars are to the fore with some nifty runs in amongst the big riffs. Something of a powerful drumming performance too to back up the gtrs with the keys providing both a wash of sound to big things up a bit more and featuring well when allowed to cut lose a little.

Musically – thumbs up. There’s a good amount of variation to mix things up without losing sight of what this is – heavy/proggy/symphonic rock music.

There is a “however” coming (couldn’t you guess…..?) and that’s the vocals. I’m in no way trying to “diss” Maria Loti. She does have a powerfully high range, no doubt about it.

That said, I can’t get on with the (in my opinion) overly-operatic style. It’s too shrill and dramatic for my tastes and it’s impossible to follow the lyrics without the CD booklet to read whilst listening.

Simply a personal opinion. That style of vocal showing not my bag. That said, I do not dislike Utopia as the music is so good, well composed and performed.

Here’s the lyric video for Stand As One.

It’s the stand-out track on the album. Excellent intro, chunky riff, fast bits, slow bits, proggy bits. Simply can’t get on with the operatic vocals.

If you like your symphonic stuff, Dimorfia may be for you. It’s not entirely for me.

Check it out on the band’s Bandcap page. Have a little listen. If you like it, why not download it.
