New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, Classic and Progressive Rock

Reuben Archer’s Personal Sin Petrolhead Review.

Reuben Archer’s Personal Sin Petrolhead ReviewMr. Archer has a long association with the New Wave of British Heavy Metal having served his time with the likes of Lautrec, Wild Horses, Lionheart and of course Stampede.

In amongst all that he has something of a solo project – Personal Sin. The latest offering from which is entitled Petrolhead. As that suggests, the songs all have a connection with cars and motoring, in particular Americana.

Suppose you could call it a loose concept album with perhaps Reuben reliving his past a little bit?

It’s an excellent collection with Reuben in fine voice and a tight band behind him.

The style is very much bluesy hard rock with a melodic edge and a bit of country/funk going on here and there too. Oh, and the occasional slow burner which works well. Listening conjures up images of blasting down Route 66 with the top down and the stereo up to eleven.

Each cut is enjoyable with a positive “feel good” vibe. It’s a grower too. After a few spins songs like No Gasoline, Good Times Rolled Away (my favourite), Grand Theft Auto and the Ballad of Junior Johnson bore in to the consciousness and stay there.

Have a listen to Grand Theft Auto:

If you liked the sound of that, no doubt you’ll like the full album.

It’s a pleasure to listen to such a finely crafted album of well put together “proper” rock songs featuring a geezer who has been there, done it, is doing it again and doing it so well.

Whether you remember Reuben from the “old days” like I do or are open to discovering new stuff from old dogs who do not need to learn new tricks (that’s meant as a compliment Mr. Archer) because they are so good at what they do. Enough already – bag yourself a copy.
