Here’s the third of the three releases which Bad Dog Promotions sent to me recently. Following on from Erewan and Arnaud Quevedo, this is the debut album from a band called Homme and titled Ma Vie En Theoremes.
The blurb sheet accompanying the CD hints at the band being around for a couple of decades and “rooted in deeply emotional progressive rock and interwoven with rock and pop.”
The lyrics are sung in French. Now, as a bloke who struggled badly in French lessons at school in the 1970s and dropping it as soon as I could (Spanish too), I have no idea what they are singing about.
The album comprises of ten songs. It’s generally quite jaunty and enjoyable with some energy behind it and some very tasty, free-flowing guitars. Both in terms of soloing and rhythm work.
The opening track is a heavy one. A snarling, viscous bass punching away. The strident drumming backs it up and the guitar is heavy too. The vocals delivered in an angry style make for a short, hard rocking start.
The bass and guitar come to the forefront of the title track too. Toxic Girl follows and I think is quite catchy. I guess this is the aforementioned pop influences coming in.
The album continues to flow well with varying tones. The guitars generally prominent and the solos are consistently good.
Mon Capitane brings back the melodic/pop style and Le Tunnel is the first sign of progginess I’d say – and has another fine guitar solo.
Pile Ou Face is pretty much French reggae then Le Grand Voyage rounds things out with some changes in pace and power and yet more of that fine free flowing guitar work.
If you do like solos, you’ll have enough here to keep you happy.
Here’s the opening track for a listen:
I’d say Homme have a competent debut album. It’s more melodic rock/pop than prog. The solos give it a solid feel as does the big bass and the energetic, crisp drumming.
If you’d like to give it a go, physical and digital versions from Homme’s BandCamp page:

Now – Bad Dog Promotions are still on a roll…….I’ve received another one from them. An album by Tale Cue titled Eclipse of the Midnight Sun. On first listen, it’s a jolly good symphonic/heavy prog metal style. Review to follow after a few more listens.
