Idling away a few minutes absent-mindedly looking at random music vids on YouTube I landed on a frantic number by a band called Outside.
The style screamed 1970s/1980s New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Hmmmm, I thought to myself. I don’t recall Outside from the NWOBHM days – must check them out further.
And I discovered that Outside were in fact from Germany and formed in the early 1980s.
Perhaps they were heavily influenced by NWOBHM as their style does allow one to draw that conclusion.
The big, fast crunching/slashing riffs, dual guitar soloing etc. and the raw, rough (but enjoyable) edges.
A quick visit to Amazon and order placed for one of Outside’s albums reissued on CD. Magic Sacrifice. The eye-catching cover art suggested period prog/pomp – though I knew from the YouTube vid it wasn’t……
On listening to Magic Sacrifice, it displays all the classic NWOBHM style hallmarks and is jolly good fun. Certainly pleased with the impulse purchase.
The opening track, Hot ‘n’ Ready being a prime example. Have a look at/listen to it below:

Does it not sound just like NWOBHM from the heyday?
The rest of the album follows a similar path though Outside not all about outright heaviness. They can do other stuff too such as the power-ballad style of 300 Days and the excellent Back in Town.
As this CD of Magic Sacrifice is a re-issue it does include a couple of tasty bonus tracks in the shape of Action and Heavy Metal, which were the band’s debut single. Even more NWOBHM style and influences here. It’s really good stuff.
Outside wouldn’t have a long career splitting in 1990 with (I think) two other albums behind them in addition to Magic Sacrifice.
I like this album plenty. And recommend it to anyone with an interest in NWOBHM or heavy metal in general. Do check it out for yourself.
