New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, Classic and Progressive Rock

Rock Goddess This Time Review

Rock Goddess This TimeBack with their first album in three decades, the reformed Rock Goddess stay true to their New Wave of British Heavy Metal roots with an offering full of tight, punchy songs with some swagger.

The band was first put together by the Turner sisters (Jody and Julie) towards the end of the 1970s whilst both were still at school. Bassist Tracey Lamb completed the trio – and off they set on the hopeful path to rock stardom.

The obvious comparison being that with Girlschool. Though whilst Girlschool had a more “punky” style, Rock Goddess were (and are) more traditional NWOBHM/heavy.

Back in the NWOBHM days, it did look more than promising for Rock Goddess, however with the Turner sisters being so young and still at school, it did cause issues getting gigs and whatnot.

Undeterred, the girls simply cracked on and made more than a reasonable fist of things landing a contract with major label A&B and a debut album emerging in 1982 with the momentum kept up by a second album and touring with the likes of Y&T, Iron Maiden and Def Leppard.

Then things began to stall with a low key third album before things pretty much ended for Rock Goddess.

But not for good……..the Turners and Lamb put the band back together half a dozen years or so ago, did a few gigs and last year (2018) recorded a brand new album – This Time which was released earlier this year.

This Time is a cracking album. Perhaps a little short on running time at around 35 minutes, however it’s a quality 35 minutes squeezing in nine songs none of which disappoint.

Nice, big chunky riffs to push things along, tasty bass lines from Lamb and Julie Turner adept with the drumming.

Are You ready gets right out of the traps like a greyhound. Fast paced in yer face stuff. Obsession slightly sleazy and dark. Calling to Space is a bit of an abridged epic. Have a listen:

Flying to See You has a nice melody and hook amongst the riffage as does the title cut. It’s My Turn keeps the power up before the closer – Drive Me Away comes close to power ballad territory.

Rock Goddess still have the chops sure enough to spit out an album this good after thirty years or so in the wilderness and more than do their bit to show that you can’t keep a good NWOBHM-era band down! It’s more than worthy of a place in your collection.
